Moonstar88, a well-known Filipino rock band, recently made headlines after selling the guitar they used to record their hit songs “Migraine” and “Torete” to entrepreneur Jayson Luzadas, also known as Boss Toyo. The band’s members, Maysh Baay, Bon Sundiang, and Herbert Hernandez, visited Boss Toyo’s pawn shop on February 19, accompanied by Rye Sarmiento, Bob Cañamo, and Vic Aquino of another local rock band 6cyclemind, which Hernandez is also a part of.
Both bands decided to sell their precious musical possessions to raise funds for their colleague Allan Mitchell Silonga, who is currently battling kidney failure and heart problems. The older Silonga is the father of Blaster Silonga, a member of the bands Daddy’s Home and K24/7.
6cyclemind offered for sale a trophy they received from the show “ASAP” for their best-selling album “Home” from 2007. The album featured popular singles like “Prinsesa,” “Upside Down,” and “Dinamayan,” as well as covers of songs like “Across the Universe,” “Landslide,” and “In Between Days.”
On the other hand, Moonstar88 decided to part ways with the white electric guitar they used in the music videos for “Migraine” and “Torete,” as well as for recording other tracks. Hernandez showed the guitar to Boss Toyo as proof of its authenticity.
During the negotiation process, Hernandez shared that the guitar was the first professional instrument he was ever gifted. To showcase their musical talent, Hernandez and Baay performed an acoustic version of “Migraine” for Boss Toyo.
The starting price for 6cyclemind’s trophy was set at P350,000, while Moonstar88 jokingly priced their guitar at P888,888, poking fun at their band name. Hernandez clarified that all proceeds from the sale would go towards Silonga’s medical expenses for a kidney transplant and an angioplasty or heart bypass.
After some back and forth, Boss Toyo eventually agreed to purchase both items for P400,688. As a token of appreciation, Moonstar88 gifted Boss Toyo a vinyl record of their latest album, “Lourdes 2088,” and a limited edition disc of their 2012 album “This Year.”
Silonga later took to social media to express his gratitude towards Boss Toyo and both 6cyclemind and Moonstar88 for their efforts to help him during his time of need. He thanked them for their love and support, acknowledging that he may not have been able to contribute much to them in the past, but he was grateful for their kindness and generosity.
The heartwarming exchange between the bands, Boss Toyo, and Silonga serves as a reminder of the power of music and community coming together to support one another in times of hardship. The sale of the guitar and trophy not only helped raise funds for Silonga’s medical treatment but also showcased the camaraderie and solidarity within the Filipino music industry.
